Virtual communication methods like Zoom, email, and social media make today’s increasingly digital world go round. And while these invaluable resources have their place, nothing beats the authenticity, depth, and energy of connecting in person.
For manufacturers, the benefits of attending in-person events go beyond networking—they’re about building community, gaining fresh perspectives, and finding inspiration.
Let’s explore the timeless value of face-to-face events and see what NTMA has in store for 2025.
The Power of Face-to-Face Interactions
Everything you read on the internet is entirely accurate, right?! (We’ll let the sarcasm sink in.) The internet is a powerful tool, but it’s not without flaws.
Face-to-face events provide a reliable space for sharing ideas and insights in real-time, with opportunities to ask questions and seek clarification on the spot. As convenient as phone calls and video conferencing are, they don’t replicate the value of pulling someone aside to dive deeper into their ideas or brainstorm solutions to a shared challenge.
In addition, human connection is a fundamental need. Being around peers, hearing their stories, and exchanging ideas creates an energy that’s nearly impossible to replicate virtually. Many of our members leave NTMA events inspired by positivity and camaraderie, ready to conquer their challenges back home. Spending a few days brushing elbows with our peers reminds our members why they got into this business in the first place.
The Value of Attending NTMA Events
Learning from Industry Experts
NTMA conferences bring together speakers and panelists our members might not have encountered if they had never strayed outside the four walls of their shops. These insightful experts provide actionable takeaways, but the real magic happens when these sessions come to a close. Because they’re only a few yards away from these leaders, members feel comfortable pulling aside speakers or fellow attendees to ask deeper questions, sparking moments of clarity. Watching these kinds of interactions unfold, it becomes so evident that virtual events don’t hold a candle to their in-person counterparts.
Expanding Perspectives
At NTMA events, members meet individuals from across the country who share similar challenges and bring unique perspectives. The more viewpoints they can gather, the better equipped they’ll be to navigate future decision-making.
Sometimes, a fresh perspective can “disrupt” one’s thinking in the best way. NTMA events are packed full of these “disruptors” who bring fresh, objective perspectives to your challenges. Communicating with individuals outside your immediate circle offers unbiased opinions that can challenge your assumptions and uncover solutions that have yet to be considered.
Building a Community
Because many of our members are racing fans, including NTMA president Roger Atkins, we’ll present a topical analogy.
When you look at the strongest racing teams, what do they all have in common? They’re teams that have multiple cars in a race.
Why do you think the multi-car teams tend to perform better than single-car teams? Because the drivers and mechanics are communicating with each other! The drivers are comparing what they felt, what they saw, how they executed a tricky turn, and so on, while their mechanics are bouncing maintenance-related insights off one another. Meanwhile, a single-car team operates as an island, going it alone and hoping for the best.
Many manufacturers operate as single-car teams, but if they want to grow and overcome challenges, they should consider leaning into their support system. Like multi-car teams, NTMA members statistically outperform non-members, and it’s no coincidence—a strong manufacturing community drives momentum.
