Summary of Functions
The Controller serves as the senior financial officer responsible for directing, coordinating, and overseeing all accounting, finance, and compliance functions of the organization, including its affiliated entities—a 501(c)(6) trade association, a 501(c)(3) foundation, and a political action committee (PAC). This position ensures accurate financial reporting, compliance with federal and state regulations, efficient internal controls, and strategic financial management that supports the organization’s mission and programs.
Specific Responsibilities
Financial Management and Reporting
- Serve the Office of Treasurer & Secretary for both the association and the foundation.
- Oversee all financial operations for the association, foundation, and PAC.
- Prepare and present timely and accurate financial statements, budgets, forecasts, and reports for management, board, and team review.
- Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Maintain a robust system of internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure the integrity of financial data.
- Ensure all association and foundation meeting minutes are properly recorded, filed and stored in a safe and accessible area in accordance with the association’s governance policies
Budgeting & Planning
- Lead the annual budget development process, working closely with department heads and leadership.
- Monitor budget and cash performance and provide variance analysis with recommendations for corrective action.
- Support strategic planning with multi-year financial models and forecasting.
Compliance & Regulatory Oversight
- Ensure compliance with IRS, FEC, state, and other applicable reporting requirements for all entities.
- Manage audits for all entities, including external auditors and government reviews.
- Maintain knowledge of changes to nonprofit finance regulations, ensuring timely implementation of required updates.
- Oversee proper registration, disclosure, and reporting for the PAC in compliance with campaign finance laws.
Accounting & Operations
- Supervise accounting manager, oversee direction of the entire accounting department.
- Work directly with third party FEC accountant for the PAC.
- Manage accounts payable/receivable, payroll, cash management, and general ledger functions.
- Oversee investment accounts, bank relationships, and liquidity management.
- Implement and manage accounting systems and technology solutions to improve efficiency and reporting accuracy.
Governance & Support
- Serve as staff liaison to association Budget & Finance Team, Audit Team and Governance & Compliance Team, preparing agendas, reports, and presentations as needed.
- Serve as staff liaison to the foundation Investment Team, preparing agendas, reports, presentations and taking meeting minutes.
- Collaborate with the president and the Executive Committee on financial strategy and fiscal policy.
- Support the president and the executive assistant regarding governance structure and compliance through each organization’s code of regulations
- Ensure compliance with the existing governance structure; work with legal counsel regarding governance issues as directed by the association’s leadership
Administrative Functions
- Function as human resources manager
- Maintain current and compliant HR polices and Employee Handbook
- Oversee risk management policies and employee benefit programs
- Serve as liaison with third party IT support provider

Skills
- Deep understanding of GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex financial concepts to non-financial audiences.
- High integrity and commitment to ethical standards and transparency.
- Advanced proficiency with accounting software (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics and Report Writer) and Excel.
- Working knowledge of AI in accounting and administration areas highly desirable.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (Master’s degree or CPA preferred).
- Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive accounting and finance experience, with at least 3 years in a management or controller role.
- Experience in nonprofit and/or association finance required; familiarity with 501(c)(6) and 501(c)(3) entities strongly preferred.
- Experience managing or supporting a federal or state PAC is highly desirable.
