NTMA-U has always been a critical resource for training in the manufacturing industry, but recent updates have elevated the program to a whole new level. Jenny Stupica, NTMA’s Workforce Development Director, shared exciting developments at our 2025 Engage conference in Detroit back in October. These updates are now available to all members and non-members, making NTMA-U a game-changer for modern CNC machine shops.
Originally designed to support rural communities lacking access to Career and Technical Education (CTE), NTMA-U has gained popularity in urban areas, as well. Today, the program offers flexible, high-quality training accessible on any device, making it easier than ever for employees to gain critical skills without leaving their workplace or home.
Comprehensive, Self-Paced Instruction for All Types of Learners
The new-and-improved NTMA-U now features 24 fully updated courses complete with AI voiceover, advanced animations, 3D models, and custom illustrations. Courses are led by certified instructors via instructional videos that range from two to nine minutes each. These quick, digestible lessons are perfect for machinists looking to fit quick learning sessions into their schedule during breaks.
Students can pursue pre-apprenticeship or full registered apprenticeship programs, or take courses individually to focus on skill areas most relevant to their roles. Quizzes and tests embedded in each module ensure mastery, and college credit opportunities add even more value. Closed captions, full text, and interactive features cater to diverse learning styles, ensuring every learner can succeed.
K-12 and Apprenticeship Initiatives
NTMA-U is also reaching younger generations. A new K-12 portal allows high schools to access free content for students and instructors, and students can participate in the pre-apprenticeship program toward high school graduation or college credit.
The registered apprenticeship program is evolving into a hybrid model, recognizing prior learning for both classroom and on-the-job training. This reduces time and cost for employees with prior experience and lowers administrative barriers for employers. NTMA also partners with NIMS’ Smart Training Solutions software to streamline tracking of on-the-job training, which can be a major relief for small shops managing limited resources.
Unique Advantages of NTMA-U

Two features set NTMA-U apart from other online manufacturing training platforms:
- Its content is created by industry professionals, for industry professionals. This ensures that all information is relevant and practical.
- All instruction is embedded within the courses themselves, eliminating the need for outside instructors.
From machining safety to technical skills, NTMA-U dives deep into essential topics, offering training that is both broad and detailed. Members gain access to mechanical aptitude tests to assess employee skills. These help to evaluate where their people are and determine what they need to succeed.
Another standout feature of NTMA-U is its cost structure, which offers unmatched value compared to other training options:
- Members can access the full 12-course curriculum, including textbooks, for about $2,000 per student.
- Individual courses are just $149 each.
Looking Toward the Future of NTMA-U
Even though NTMA-U has gone through some major changes this year, we’ve got some exciting innovations coming down the pike.
Some of our future plans include:
- Translating courses into other languages, starting with Spanish: As we all know, manufacturing can be highly complex and technical. That’s why we’d love to make it possible for students to take courses in the language of their choice!
- Securing GI Bill approval for veterans: We’re working to make NTMA-U an accessible pathway for individuals who have served our country and want to transition into rewarding manufacturing careers. We hope that by gaining GI Bill approval, we can help veterans use their earned educational benefits to access world-class manufacturing training without the financial burden.
- Partnering with prison systems, foster programs, and immigrant training initiatives: We believe everyone deserves the opportunity to pursue a successful career in manufacturing, whether it’s a young person aging out of the foster system or an inmate seeking a fresh start to contribute positively to society when they’re released.
These programs provide critical skills to underserved populations while expanding the pool of qualified talent for today’s machine shop, making it a win-win for individuals and companies alike! By removing barriers and offering flexible, high-quality training, NTMA-U equips employees with the knowledge and skills to thrive.
For shop owners, managers, and employees alike, NTMA-U represents a transformative resource. With its comprehensive curriculum, accessible format, and forward-thinking initiatives, it’s helping to shape the next generation of skilled machinists while empowering today’s workforce.
